My two cents: GET OUT!!! It's not worth the risk. This is the biggest threat New Orleans has faced in many years -- bigger than Ivan, bigger than Georges. You may yet be spared, but you also may very well not! Dr. Jeff Masters puts the odds of complete destruction of the city at 10%... I think maybe it's more like 15% or 20%, in light of the latest track and intensity information. Either way, think about it... if you knew there was a 10% chance terrorists were going to set off a nuclear bomb in your city on Monday, would you stick around, or would you evacuate? That's essentially equivalent to what you're dealing with here.
Posted by Brendan Loy at August 27, 2005 01:46 PMKen, I'm from Slidell and we're probably leaving for this one. We stayed for Ivan, Georges, Isadore, and Andrew. My mom (I'm a student at SLU by the way) stayed for Betsy and Camile and yet we're probably running for this one tomorrow morning. My advice is to leave because this storm will probably the nastiest storm New Orleans has ever seen. I can't even imagine how many people are going to die and how much damage will be caused.
Posted by Kevin at August 27, 2005 05:02 PMKen...or anyone else for that matter. I moved from Slidell about a year ago but I have tons fo friends still there. I cant get any news of how Slidell, Mandeville, and the rest of St. Tammany held up. If anyone has news of its current state I'ld greatly appreciate.
Posted by Kim at August 29, 2005 03:12 PMKim, only thing I seen is from a news item in the Shreport paper about a family that lost thier home in a sudivision there. It did have a picture of the people and there was water waist deep in the street where they lived, but other than that I couldn't see much damage. I have relatives there as well in Eden Isle. I understand most of it is gone...
